DESCRIPTION:In 1994 in his hometown of Portland\, Oregon\, Thomas Lauderdal
	e was working in\nlocal politics\, attending every political fundraiser un
	der the sun... but was\ndismayed to find the music at these events underwh
	elming and lackluster. Drawing\ninspiration from music from all over the w
	orld–crossing genres of classical\,\njazz and old-fashioned pop–and hoping
	 to appeal to conservatives and liberals\nalike\, he founded the “little o
	rchestra” Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more\nbeautiful and inclusive mu
	sical soundtracks for political fundraisers for causes\nsuch as civil righ
	ts\, affordable housing\, the environment\, libraries\, public\nbroadcasti
	ng\, education and parks.\n\nOne year later\, Lauderdale called China Forb
	es\, a Harvard classmate who was\nliving in New York City\, and asked her 
	to join Pink Martini as the lead singer\,\nand collaborator. Their first s
	ong “Sympathique (Je ne veux pastravailler)”\nbecame an overnight sensatio
	n in France\, was nominated for “Song of the Year” at\nFrance’s Victoires 
	de la Musique Awards\, and is still the band’s number one\nsong. Says Laud
	erdale\, “We’re very much an American band\, but we spend a lot of\ntime a
	broad and therefore have the incredible diplomatic opportunity to\nreprese
	nt a broader\, more inclusive America... the America which remains the\nmo
	st heterogeneously populated country in the world... composed of people of
	\nevery country\, every language\, every religion.”\n\nFeaturing a dozen m
	usicians\, with songs in 25 languages\, Pink Martini performs\nits multili
	ngual repertoire onconcert stages on six continents. After making\nit’s Eu
	ropean debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and its orchestral debut\
	nwith the Oregon Symphony in 1998\, the band has gone on to play with more
	 than 50\norchestras around the world\, including multiple engagements wit
	h the Los Angeles\nPhilharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl\, the Boston Pops\, 
	the National Symphony at\nthe Kennedy Center\, the San Francisco Symphony\
	, the Cleveland Orchestra\, and the\nBBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert
	 Hall in London. In 2014\, Pink Martini was\ninducted into both the Hollyw
	ood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of\nFame.\n\nPink Martini 
	has released 11 studio albums on its own independent label Heinz\nRecords 
	(named after Lauderdale’s dog)\, selling over 3 million albums worldwide.\
